What to Expect at Lindos Acropolis

What to Expect at Lindos Acropolis

Lindos Acropolis is an archaeological site on the hill above the present-day settlement. Ancient Lindos was built where the village stands today, and the acropolis formed the settlement’s centre.

The site brings together remains associated with antiquity, the Byzantine era and the period of the Knights. The National Tourism Organisation of Greece describes the Acropolis as overlooking the Aegean Sea and notes Lindos’s prominence in the 7th–6th centuries BC.

The hilltop setting helps explain why the acropolis has been a defining feature of Lindos across its history. For a closer account of how the site changed over time, read this Lindos Acropolis history.

The Main Archaeological Remains

The Main Archaeological Remains

The Acropolis contains the Temple of Athena Lindia, a Hellenistic stoa, the church of Agios Ioannis and an administrative building associated with the Knights.

These remains represent different chapters in the site’s use and construction. The church of Agios Ioannis dates to the 13th century. Slightly below the Acropolis are an ancient stadium and a small open-air theatre.

As you move through the site, the setting links the ruins to the settlement below: the acropolis was not separate from ancient Lindos, but its centre. A guide to Lindos village can help put the hilltop site in the context of the lanes and sights around it.

The Sanctuary of Athena Lindia

The Sanctuary of Athena Lindia

The Temple of Athena Lindia stands at the top of the Acropolis. It is one of the site’s principal ancient monuments, set among remains from later periods.

The sanctuary gives the hilltop its name and is a central part of the archaeological site. Its position at the summit also places it within the wider composition of the Acropolis, where ancient, Byzantine and Knights-era remains share the same historic setting.

To focus your visit, make the temple the upper point of your route through the site, then take time to notice the other remains around it. The archaeological history of the sanctuary and the wider hilltop is covered in more detail in the linked history of Lindos Acropolis.

The Hilltop Setting and Views

The Hilltop Setting and Views

Lindos Acropolis stands on a 116-metre-high cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea. From the hilltop, the sea forms the setting for the archaeological remains and the village below.

The cliff is part of the site’s character as well as its landscape. You can take in the coastal outlook while moving between the remains, with the Acropolis positioned above the settlement it once served as a centre.

Walking Up from Lindos Village

The walk from Lindos’s traditional settlement to the Acropolis takes about 10 minutes, according to the Hellenic Heritage listing. From a suite property in Lindos, the walk is about 11 minutes; the Acropolis is also about 5 minutes away by car.

Expect an uphill approach through the village and toward the hilltop site.
